Process for catastrophe claims response

A catastrophe can create considerable disruption in your life. Progressive understands this and will work with you throughout the entire claims process — from initial response through final resolution — to provide fast and caring claims service.

When a catastrophe hits, members of our Catastrophe Services Team are sent to the affected areas as soon as it's safe. In many cases, they're there within 24 hours and will stay on-site for as long as it takes to settle the claims. Plus, representatives are available immediately to help impacted customers start the claims process.

How to report a vehicle catastrophe claim

When you file a catastrophe claim for a car, motorcycle, boat, or RV/trailer, follow this general process.

  1. Report your claim: When it's safe, log in to report your claim online. A representative will ask you some initial questions so they can begin resolving your claim immediately.
  2. Talk with your representative: A claims representative will contact you as quickly as possible (generally by the end of the business day) to answer your questions and confirm the inspection schedule for your vehicle. Discuss any questions you have about deductibles, what your policy covers, and the repairs with your claims representative.
  3. Get your representative's estimate: Your representative will inspect your vehicle's damage and provide an estimate for covered repairs. In disaster areas, there are often drive-in claims locations that allow you to bring your vehicle in for a damage estimate. The insurance company can dispatch specially trained claims representatives to affected areas to inspect the damage.
  4. Schedule repairs: You'll have access to help to arrange vehicle repair services and towing if needed. Progressive's network of repair shops is often available, depending on where you live and the circumstances surrounding the catastrophe. If body shops in your area are closed due to a catastrophe, you'll have access to referrals to other nearby shops in our network. Or you can select a repair facility. If you use a repair shop in Progressive's network, you'll get a copy of our Limited Lifetime Guarantee, which is valid for as long as you own or lease your vehicle.
  5. Get a rental: If you need a rental car and you have rental coverage with Progressive, your claims representative can arrange for one. The rental can even be billed directly to Progressive. Keep in mind that rental reimbursement varies based on policy coverages and catastrophe circumstances.
  6. Stay in touch: The team will keep you informed about your claim by periodically checking the status of repairs and addressing any further issues, such as additional damage, supplemental payments, and changes to the expected completion date, while your vehicle is in the shop.

How to report a homeowners or renters catastrophe claim

If you're filing a catastrophe claim through your homeowners or renters insurance, follow these steps.

  1. Report your claim: When it's safe to do so, Progressive Home customers with policies underwritten by ASI/Progressive can log in to report a claim online or call 1-866-274-5677. A representative will ask you some initial questions so they can begin resolving your claim immediately. Progressive Home customers with policies underwritten by other insurers can call us at 1-855-347-3939 or contact your insurer via the Progressive Home directory.
  2. Talk with your representative: A representative will contact you as quickly as possible (generally by the end of the following business day) to answer your questions, discuss your policy and coverage, and determine the best method of inspection. Start documenting the damage with photos and videos and share them with your representative throughout the claims process.
  3. Prevent further damage: Take steps to prevent further property damage (such as long-term water damage) before repairs begin. We can help you arrange mitigation and additional living services if needed. Progressive has a network of property service providers that are often available, depending on where you live and the circumstances surrounding the catastrophe. Or, if you prefer, you also can select your preferred mitigation services.
  4. Get a repair estimate: Your representative will inspect your home's damage and provide an estimate for covered repairs.
  5. Stay in touch: Progressive Home will keep you informed about your claim and any further issues, such as additional damage. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to your claims adjuster.
